4. That password's a bit complicated, can I change it?
5. Can I change my user name?

10. WTF do the abbreviations mean?

1. What's it for?
Get your questions answered, give your opinion or point of view, exchange information, and generally help and inform one another.

Retell Therapy is a moderated forum where members can exchange information, seek and offer help with parenting dilemmas or simply have fun. Whether you have a question, an important message for humanity or a harmless observation about life, you are welcome, regardless of your gender, parental status or creed.

BMC has moderators whose role is to promote freedom of speech, while preventing personal attacks. Some feel there is a grey area in the middle of these two positions, and not everyone draws the line in the same place. However, where it is felt that a post or thread has become abusive, it will be deleted. The moderators represent the Editor in all such matters, and their decisions are final. Click here to learn more about the role of the moderators.

2. What do I do first?
Before you can start a discussion or post a comment, you'll need to register.

3. Anything else?
If you see a posting you find offensive, email us and we'll remove it as soon as we can.

4. That password's a bit complicated, can I change it?
Yes you can. After you've posted, your name hyperlinks to the "About me" page. If you're logged in, you will see a button marked "Edit my Settings" in the right-hand column. You can use that button to change your password or to tell other users something about yourself.

5. Can I change my user name?
You can't, but we can. Just email tech support using the email address you registered with and we'll do it as quickly as we can.

6. I can't register/log in. What's going on?
What should happen when you click register is that a pop-up window opens for you to enter your user name and password. If nothing happens, the problem could be that you have JavaScript disabled, or that your browser doesn't allow scripts to open new windows. Do you get an error message?

The first place to look would be in your browser settings. Is there anything in there which is preventing the script from running? In IE 6, click the Security tab and click "Custom Level". Scroll down to the "Scripting" section (it's near the bottom). Make sure that "Active scripting" is set to "Enable". You will also need cookie security set to "medium" or lower in IE.

If you go to fregister.htm and type in your username and email address, you should be able to register without the need for the JavaScript which opens the pop-up.

You could also try clearing your cache and trying again - you may have a bad copy of clientside.js, which holds the code which pops up the window.

Of course logging in also uses a pop-up, so if you're still having trouble open flogin.htm and type in your username and password. This should set the cookie. Alternatively, you can use the site without logging in, but you have to type in your username and password every time you post.

Visiting cclearer.htm should log you out and remove out-of date cookies from your machine. You might want to do this if the cookie file becomes too large.

If you just started having this problem, maybe this article on the Microsoft Knowledge Base will help - You cannot open a new Internet Explorer window or nothing occurs after you click a link.

If you're still having trouble, please email tech support with details of your operating system and browser, and a description of the problem - what did you do, what did you expect to happen, what actually happened.

7. How do the little smiley things work?
We had a request for "emoticons" - it's difficult to convey "tone" in a forum like this, so these should help. The site will translate your post automatically and can embed the following symbols:

To get:

You type:

:)

smile

:(

frown

;)

wink

8(

angry

8)

whatever

3)

sleepy

:D

grin

:P

8. What to do when it really isn't working
If the main site really isn't working, email tech support and we'll do what we can - during office hours, anyway.

9. How do I put a picture in my profile?
Go to your user profile page and click edit my settings.
Use the change my picture dialogue to upload a JPEG image no larger than 250x250 pixels.

Helsbelles explains how to resize a picture:
do you have any kind of photo editing software? Photoshop, or something like that? If you don't know, try saving the pic to your desk top, then right click on the icon: it should bring up a menu that includes 'open with', and then you can see what options you have.

Open it with the editing software (assuming that you have some). Then, in the menu bar at the top, try the different options (probably under something called 'edit' or 'image' until you come across one that says 'resize'. The rest should be pretty obvious from there - just change the number of pixels in the boxes to 250, then save the image again.
